A dialogue session on the importance of environmental disclosure in the reports of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative in Iraq

Ther Development Center , in cooperation with the Iraqi Alliance for Transparency in the Extractive Industries and with the support of PWYP and NORAD, held a dialogue session at the Marbad Hotel in Basra on 31 T.1 2021 on the importance of environmental disclosure in the reports of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative in Iraq, attended by 30 civil society activists from Basra and Maysan governorates And Dhi Qar and Muthanna, where d. Walid Al-Moussawi, Director General of the Environmental Protection Department in the Southern Region.
The session discussed the importance of environmental disclosure, the nature and causes of pollution in the producing governorates, especially Basra, the negative effects of environmental pollution on the population, methods of prevention and treatment of pollutants, and means of prevention and compulsory protection from pollution as a result of extractive industries.
In their questions and interventions, the participants discussed the necessities of protecting biodiversity and increasing green spaces, and the normative afforestation operations in proportion to the population and other topics related to the nature of the city of Basra and the marine impacts on its waters.
At the end of the session, a number of recommendations and proposals were put forward to develop the environmental situation in Basra and the necessity of annual disclosure of the environmental situation in the initiative’s reports.
